Pipes
This painting depicts a richly textured tangle of handcrafted wooden pipes from Cogolin, the Provençal town where I lived for fifteen years. Wanting to honour the region’s artisanal heritage, I approached the local pipe maker, who generously lent me a selection of their beautifully shaped briar pipes for a dedicated photo session. Arranged in sculptural layers, their polished bowls and stems catch warm light, revealing subtle shifts in grain, sheen, and colour. Painted using classical techniques, beginning with a precise underdrawing, followed by monochrome underpainting and successive layers of transparent glazes, the work brings out the deep amber tones, glossy highlights, and tactile surfaces of the pipes. The composition becomes almost abstract in places, celebrating form, craftsmanship, and the quiet beauty of everyday objects transformed through painterly attention.
