Toby Boothman is a British painter based near Aix-en-Provence, France. For more than 30 years, his work has combined traditional Old Master painting techniques with subjects ranging from figurative painting and still life to marine, automobiles and commissioned works.

At the age of 21, he studied at Atelier Neo Medici in Monflanquin, France, under Patrick Betaudier. There he was trained in a painting method derived from the techniques associated with Jan van Eyck, building paintings through careful drawing, monochrome underpainting and successive transparent colour glazes.

Since then, Boothman has exhibited and undertaken commissions internationally while continuing to study the methods of painters including Van Eyck, Vermeer, Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio. His long-term study of historical painting techniques also led to Secrets of the Old Masters, bringing together his own work and the paintings that have influenced his practice.

Today he continues to paint and teach from his atelier in Provence. His current projects include a re-creation of Caravaggio’s The Supper at Emmaus and the development of online courses through which he is making the traditional methods he has practised for more than three decades accessible to a wider audience.
