Where technology meets the timeless craft of the Old Masters
The New Old Masters
Let’s create…
Imagine a cinematic scene of Vermeer working in his studio, surrounded by his artistic palette with sketches on the walls. Sunlight filters through the windows, casting long shadows across his desk where he sits, sketching a figure in intricate detail. In one corner, an antique mirror stands, reflecting light from outside and adding depth to the scene. His expression reveals deep concentration, as if lost amidst his thoughts.
Now, I can recreate this imagined world digitally: designing the composition, directing the lighting and exploring infinite visual possibilities, before ever lifting a paint brush.
Where once a studio, models, costumes, props and elaborate lighting were required, now I can direct a cinematic moment, frame by frame, until the perfect image emerges to be transformed into paint.
Technology evolves, but true artistry never ages.
In this series, I use the tools of today to continue the legacy of the great painters of the past. Just as Vermeer embraced the camera obscura, I embrace the creative potential of technology. Together, these tools allow me to imagine and compose new worlds, guided by the same principles of light, form and emotion that shaped the Golden Age of painting.
From that image, I move to the traditional process:
• The camera obscura for precise mapping
• The imprimatura to set the tone
• The underpainting in umber and white
• And finally, glazes of colour, breathing life into the vision
Modern technology becomes the new sketchbook.
A new masterpiece is born
From pixels to paint
This synthesis of past and present transforms imagination into tangible form: a conceived concept, painted in the language of the Old Masters.
The result is art that bridges centuries, not stuck in the past, but inspired by it.
